Human Rights Monitoring

A course in human rights monitoring, developed in co-operation with the Rafto House, and will be held for the first time in the fall semester 2001. As our course in iInternational Election Observation, upon passed exam students are awarded 10 DECT points.

 

Description

The course will be split in three different topics that concern Human Rights monitoring.

 

National

Human Rights in a historical perspectiv

International

Human Rights and Good Governance

Supranational

Human Rights and Realpolitik

  • NGOs - an overview - An introduction to the most important actors in the field, an the ethical dilemmas they face.
  • Methodology: Strategy, Conduct, How to prioritise, What to look for.
  • IGOs-an overview - An introduction to the most important actors in the field, an the ethical dilemmas they face.
  • Transitional justice - the role and effect of truth commissions
  • Monitoring and reporting HR violations

  • Supranational institutions - an overview
  • Humanitarian intervention and peace brokering
  • Globalisation of human rights. An economic and an ideological perspective

 

The first weekend will mainly focus on the NGOs (Non Governmental Organisations) - who they are, where they operate and how they operate in their given fields.
The second weekend's the main emphasize will be on IGOs (International Governmental Organisations), what kind of international rules there are for Human Rigths, who decides, and how the Human Rigths standards are set.
The third weekend will mainly concentrate on the logic of international law and where, when and how they are implemented.

 

Cost.
The course fee is NOK 8.000,-. In addition there will be some expenses for study material and eventual travel and accommodation. The fee includes a compendium covering the majority of the curriculum.

Course start: 28th August 2001 Application deadline: 1st July 2001

 

Entrance and entrance requirements.
In order to be accepted as a student, the candidate must have completed a bachelor, or an equivalent university or polytechnical degree. Relevant work experience for at least eight years, may substitute the criteria for higher education.
All the study material will be in English, affluency in the language is therefore a necessity. Applicants with more than three years of relevant work experience after finished academic degree will be prioritised for entrance. Applicants with language skills in addition to English will also be prioritised.
